Who We Are
Growing up in Conway, SC in the early 80’s, I lived for Saturday morning PBS programming with Norm Abram in the The New Yankee Workshop and The Wood Wright Shop with Roy Underhill. I was mesmerized and couldn’t get enough. At 12 years old, I wasn’t quite ready for power tools, so Roy Underhill was the most inspiring. I would spend my weekends practicing his skills: bending wood in a homemade steam box, hand cutting dovetails, eventually making my own foot powered lathe.
When I started my first job as a teenager at a local bakery, my Mother told me two things: "Make your employer successful." And, "You cannot quit until you have perfected your role.” Pretty simple advice, but these have become the foundation for all of my work.
As typically happens with our childhood passions, other things can take front seat as we grow up. After majoring in education, moving to Charlotte, and starting a family with my beautiful wife, Natasha, I had to make a change. I had to get back to my true passion.
In 2011, I quit teaching and became a handyman, not exactly Norm Abram, but I felt alive. After a lot of trial and error, I slowly moved to larger and more technical projects. Along this journey, I have been able to compile a group of craftsmen that bring detail and quality to each and every project Boyd’s Custom Building executes.
Boyd’s Custom Building is focused on bringing the best our industry has to offer to Whole House Renovations, Home Additions and Custom Homes. We preserve the past while fully engaging with and creating advancements in our industry. We serve our team; we serve the houses that we touch; and we serve our customers.
