Step Three: Three Estimates – To Bid or not to Bid

I’m not exactly sure where the only qualifying steps you needed to take before hiring someone was to get three bids?

In all honesty, I disagree with this “philosophy” because it breeds an environment of low balling or trying to cut cost on the initial bid, just to win the job.  When the budget is so lean, the margin for excellence is usually what gets cut, not to mention pricing a project six figures or above is very time consuming for two people that are not going to get the work.  If cost is the paramount factor, just remember, if you are lucky, you will get what you pay for when bargain shopping.

But, please do take the time to meet with, discuss, interview the builders you are considering.  Get to know them. Have them take you to some of their current jobs. Ask them about their most difficult customer(s) from the past.  You are about to embark on a new relationship; make sure you get along. The adventure will be much more enjoyable!
